  1. I really liked the experience section of your resume and how you successfully provide many details without providing specific information. The flow was interesting by starting with personal experiences, transitioning to work and returning to personal. This shift works nicely with your ‘Objective’ since both experiences are equally important for seeing the big picture.

The part I found slightly off was the ‘Event Planner’ section because it doesn’t follow the same pattern of the other sections. The same happens with ‘I was’ under ‘Parent’ since ‘I have” had been repeated in previous sections.

  2. Hello Futura –

I’m glad you tried a summary since there is not one on your LinkedIn page.

“I’d like to help others understand complex economic, political, legal, and social issues that are relevant to their community and personal life. I want to use my ability to condense complex issues into a more simplistic form that are easier to understand. I want to use my ability to view the big picture and show that the future is hopeful.”

This is a good first draft, but it’s repetitive. You use the phrase, “I want to use my ability to…” twice and the word complex twice. All three sentences are drafts of the same idea.

As I said in the lecture, a resume summary or objective can be useful for defining goals, but it can’t be a request. Recruiters are like any audience. They don’t want to know what you hope to do. They don’t want to help you decide. Human Resources wants confidence. Try something like this:

Futura Bazaar is a futurist who focuses on economic, political, legal, and social issues. A lifelong broadcaster and performer, Futura uses both her journalism and artistic skills to analyze, envision, and report on the positive aspects of technological change.

See how the phrasing makes this a declaration rather than a hope? Do you know the word futurist? It is a profession now: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futurist. They even have an association: http://www.profuturists.org/

The rest of your resume is a great list of your talents, but again, the phrasing takes away the impact. I have read, I have read, I have written, I have written, I have been, I have been. Look at the resume for your classmate White Dogwood: https://whitedogwood.wordpress.com/2015/06/07/resume-for-white-dogwood/ She has a similar background to yours, but she uses short descriptions of her various projects to give meaning to her skills and wrap them in a narrative. She also shows a tremendous amount of focus.

I know you have stories to tell as well: “I have performed at Disney World, at a half-time NFL game, and with a Pops Orchestra with Erich Kunzel conducting.”

How do your past experiences convince us that you can investigate and imagine the complex changes in our future? A resume is not a list of what you’ve done; it is a selective narrative of your experiences relevant to your goals.

Think about this when you imagine a new resume/web presence in your rewrite assignment. Good work.

  3. I want to first commend you on your experiences, positivity and optimism that shows with your resume.

I would have liked to have seen short descriptions of each of your experiences so I can follow them even deeper as the reader.

I’ve heard that the objective isn’t too important to include since it doesn’t say much besides what your looking to do, rather than showing what you “can” do.
